New Zealands

Hi! My name is Mallary and I own Holding Gold Rabbitry. I have chosen to follow the European system for the commercial side of my rabbitry. I learned that you need excellent stock for this system to be successful, as it incorporates a 14 day breed back for your does. The system does put a drain on your stock and requires good management skills. In order for such an intensive breeding regimen to work, I use the best feed (18% protein) and stick to a strict 28 day weaning. If you do not stay on top of things, you will find yourself with a bunch of little ones and nowhere to stack 'em, as well as a herd of unproductive stock.

Before I purchased the supplies for my rabbitry, I researched many different rabbitries and different rabbit management systems. I looked for what I believed to be the best system. The more I researched, the more I leaned towards Italy and France. After all, they raise more meat per doe than the US, actually more than anyone. So here I am.

In a short time, Holding Gold went from 2 does and 1 buck to almost 400 rabbits. I purchased a rabbitry, Knob Hill Rabbitry, which I had toured early in my research. This rabbitry was the most up to date of all the facilities that I was able to see. I had already visited about ten rabbitries at this time. Knob Hill Rabbitry was more modern with totally different features that I thought were more like Europe. One thing different from Europe, I live in Texas where the summers are a hundred degrees.

This is where I learned about misting systems, fogging systems and insulation. The one factor that rabbits do not like is heat. They can tolerate it;they just cannot be productive in the heat. Bucks go sterile and the pregnant does have an incredibly hard time with kindling. I would have does that would have full litters but raise only a few. This really cut down my average babies per doe per litter.
